Murray, Sir David Of Gorthy

(1567-1629)

   The son of Robert Murray of Abercairny, Perthshire, he was an officer in the household to James VI of Scotland and I of Great Britain. He also served Prince Henry. Charles I bestowed upon him the estate of Gorthy, Perthshire, but he died soon afterward without an heir. He wrote 22 sonnets as well as some other poems. Some of his poems: "A Paraphrase of the 104 Psalme," "Caelia. Containing Certaine Sonets," "Epitaph on the death of his deare cousin," "Gazing from out the windowes of mine eyes," "The Complaint of the Shepheard Harpalus," "The Tragicall Death of Sophonisba."
